Erin Barach

I received a Bachelor’s degree in Studio Art with a minor in Art History from Skidmore College and an MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art. I have made work while on residency or living in France, Ireland, the Netherlands, Saratoga Springs, Troy, Chicago, Santa Fe, San Diego, Baltimore and New York. Most recently, I attended the Tyrone Guthrie Centre in Annaghmakerrig, Ireland. I have exhibited nationally at venues including the Institute of Contemporary Art Baltimore, Maryland Art Place, Cue Art Foundation and Tang Teaching Museum and Gallery, with artwork in private collections throughout the United States and abroad.

I make drawings and installations about the act of taking up space, letting go of premeditation and surrendering to ambiguity. Thinking about the role of physical mark-making in contemporary life, I create imagery that reflects my need to create order and subsequently break it down. Over the past year, I’ve been processing a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis, the onset of which included balance issues, blurred vision and cognitive displacement, among other things. My relationship to my body was completely uprooted, and yet my understanding of boundaries, groundlessness, sensorial perception, and ambiguity have only been strengthened.
